The What and the Why

What is social media?

Social media is the social interaction among people in which they create, share or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks. This form of media makes the transfer of text, photos, audio, video, and information in general increasingly fluid among internet users. Platforms like twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn have created online communities where people can share as much or as little personal information as they desire with other members. The result is an enormous amount of information that can be easily shared, searched, promoted, disputed, and created. Social media marketing refers to the process of gaining traffic or attention through social media sites.

Why should believers be involved in social media?

To market your ministry and evangelize. Your ministry is a help and support to the people and the people need to know that. The internet has changed us and has become the main source in which to gather information from. People still use the phone book, read the newspaper, and utilize libraries. However, the numbers who do have decreased, especially among the younger generations. Many people say social media is going to change us but it has already started and has made the world we live in a totally different place than it was 10 years ago. Between computers, smartphones, and tablets social media is everywhere and we need to be too. On that note,  “Go ye therefore and teach all nations…”  and the rest of the Great Commission includes the nations that live on social media. Utilizing social media also lets us “shine our light before men,” connect with one another, and build stronger relationships with those who aren’t in our immediate area.
